The Mixpanel alternative that shows you what to fix

Sequential gives you the funnels, flows, retention and replays you use in Mixpanel, and it tells you where your users get stuck and how many people it hit.

Keep your mixpanel.init call. Change the key and the host, and your tracking calls stay as they are.

01

Why teams choose Sequential over Mixpanel

  • The replay behind each number. Funnels count people through steps in order. Click a drop to see who left, and play their sessions from the moment they left.
  • Problems found and counted for you. Sequential finds exceptions, failed requests, dead clicks, rage clicks and dead ends in your events and replays. Exceptions and failed requests come from the recorder line. It counts exactly how many people hit each one, every 15 minutes by default.
  • Know which recording to open. Evidence ranks your judged sessions by how much they need a look. Sessions that broke for the person come first, then sessions where the person struggled.
  • Answers inside each replay. In each judged replay, the judge's reading tells you what the person came to do, how the session ended and where they struggled. Click a moment, and the replay goes to that moment.
  • A check after the release that fixes a problem. Record the release and name the case that it fixes. Sequential then counts the same problem before and after that release.
  • Your Mixpanel SDK stays. Change the key and the host in mixpanel.init. Your track, identify, track_pageview and autocapture calls keep working.

What replaces what

Mixpanel features and their Sequential equivalents
You use in MixpanelIn Sequential
Insights reportsThe events explorer charts events by hour, day or week, grouped by page, browser or referrer, with AND, OR and NOT filters.
FunnelsFunnels count people, not events, through steps in order, and a click on a drop plays the sessions of the people who left.
FlowsFlows show the routes between steps, with loops and detours, and where people left.
RetentionRetention shows who comes back on the days you choose, by day or by week.
BoardsThe Board keeps the answers you save and asks each one again when you open it. Saved funnels, retention and session searches are shared with your team.
Session ReplaySession replay lists your analytics events, clicks, page changes and JavaScript errors under the replay, in time order. Failed requests show in DevTools, in sync with playback. Errors and failed requests are also marked on the replay timeline.
Heatmaps and clickmapsHeatmaps store clicks against the element that people clicked, with separate Desktop, Tablet and Mobile maps and scroll depth.
AutocaptureYour Mixpanel autocapture keeps working: page views, autocaptured clicks, submits, rage clicks and dead clicks all arrive in Sequential.
Mixpanel MCP ServerConnect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client, and your agent gets the problem, how many people had it and the replays.

Keep your Mixpanel tracking

  1. Create your account

Create an account in the hosted preview with your work email and a password. Setup has four steps: Organisation, Project, Install and Agent.

  2. Point mixpanel.init at Sequential

In the mixpanel.init call you already have, replace the project token with your Sequential Mixpanel ingest key. Add api_host with the Sequential API URL. Keep every other option.

  3. Add the recorder line

For web replay, add the recorder line. The recorder adds its session id to your Mixpanel events, so your events show under the replay, in time order. This works when the Mixpanel SDK is on window.mixpanel.

  4. See your first events

Your project's Setup page shows a Mixpanel line with "receiving" when the first event arrives. Events usually show within about a minute.

Your coding agent can do the install. Copy one prompt into it. It adds Sequential to the analytics you already run, runs your build and tests, and lists every file it changed. You read the diff.

What you get on top

  • Connect your coding agent. Ask in plain words over MCP, and your agent gets the problem, how many people had it and the replays. A new token starts with read access and Ask. It does not change data, with one exception: getting a fix brief marks the case as handed off.
  • A fix brief for each case. Each case comes with a fix brief: what users hit, where, the evidence, since when, and how Sequential checks the fix after the release.
  • Release check. Record the release and name the case that it fixes. Sequential then counts the same problem before and after that release. It states what changed, for example Improved or Fixed.
  • Ask. Type one plain sentence, such as "tried to pay and was blocked by a payment error". Sequential lists the sessions that likely show it, strongest first.
  • Your Questions. You write the questions that Sequential asks about each judged session, such as "Did they send an invite?". You get answers in the words of your product.
  • Changes. Changes is a timeline of releases, product changes, prices, campaigns and incidents. When you look at a release check, Sequential lists the changes recorded near that time.

Questions people ask

Is Sequential a good alternative to Mixpanel?

Yes. Sequential is session replay and product analytics in one product, with funnels, flows, retention and an events explorer. It also finds where your users get stuck and counts how many people it hit.

Can I keep my Mixpanel SDK?

Yes. In your mixpanel.init call, replace the project token with your Sequential Mixpanel ingest key and add api_host. Your track, identify, track_pageview and autocapture calls keep working, and one recorder line adds web replay.

Does Sequential have session replay, funnels and heatmaps?

Yes. Sequential has session replay with DevTools, funnels that count people across sessions, flows, retention and heatmaps for Desktop, Tablet and Mobile screen widths.

How much does Sequential cost?

Sequential is in hosted preview, and the hosted preview takes no payment. Anyone can create an account.

How long does switching from Mixpanel take?

You change two values in mixpanel.init and add one recorder line. Events usually show within about a minute, and your coding agent can do the install for you.

Can my coding agent read my Sequential data?

Yes. Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Claude Desktop or another MCP client. Your agent sees only the tools that its token allows, and it gets people as ids.
