The PostHog alternative that shows you what to fix

Keep your PostHog tracking, and get session replay and product analytics that find where users get stuck, count how many people it hit and measure the release that fixes it.

Change two values in your posthog.init call. Events usually show within about a minute.

01

Why teams choose Sequential over PostHog

  • Know which recording to open. Sequential ranks new sessions. Evidence puts sessions that broke for the person first, then sessions where the person struggled, then the rest.
  • Answers in each replay. In each judged replay, the judge's reading tells you what the person came to do, how the session ended and where they struggled. Click a moment, and the replay goes to that moment.
  • Problems counted exactly. Cases come from fixed rules over your events and replays. Sequential groups the same problem across sessions and counts exactly how many people hit it, every 15 minutes by default.
  • Measure your release. Record the release and name the case that it fixes. Sequential then counts the same problem before and after that release. It states what changed, for example Improved or Fixed.
  • Keep your PostHog tracking calls. Change the key and the host in the posthog.init call. Your capture, identify and autocapture calls stay as they are.
  • Your coding agent gets the evidence. Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client. Ask in plain words, and your agent gets the problem, how many people had it and the replays.

What replaces what

PostHog features and their Sequential equivalents
You use in PostHogIn Sequential
Product analyticsFunnels count people through steps in order, and you can play the sessions of the people who left from the moment they left.
Web analyticsThe Brief fills itself from your data, up to the last 30 days: traffic, top pages, errors, frustrated clicks and sessions worth a look.
Session replayRanked replays with the judge's reading for each judged session that tells you what the person came to do, how the session ended and where they struggled.
Session replay DevTools panelEach web replay can show the console, network requests, JavaScript errors and page speed from the user's browser, in sync with playback.
Mobile session replayPostHog's open-source iOS and Android SDKs send events and screen recordings to Sequential, and mobile replays play in the same player.
HeatmapsHeatmaps store clicks against the element that people clicked, so the heat stays on that element at any screen width.
Error trackingA JavaScript error or a server error becomes a case from the first session it happens in, with the exact number of sessions and people.
Replay VisionYou write the questions that Sequential asks about each judged session, such as "Did they send an invite?", and get answers in the words of your product.
PostHog MCPConnect your coding agent over MCP. A new token starts with read access and Ask. A tool that writes needs a scope that you select, with one exception: getting a fix brief marks the case as handed off.

Keep your PostHog tracking

The PostHog install guide says what each part of posthog-js does when it sends to Sequential. Read it before you switch.

  1. Change two values

In the posthog.init call you already have, the project token becomes your Sequential PostHog ingest key, and api_host becomes the Sequential API URL. Remove a ui_host if you set one.

  2. Add the recorder line

For web replay, add the recorder line after the SDK on every page that you want to replay. The recorder reads PostHog's session id when the PostHog SDK is on window.posthog, so your PostHog events show under the replay, in time order.

  3. Check that events arrive

Your project's Setup page shows a PostHog line with "receiving" when the first event arrives. Events usually show within about a minute.

Your existing PostHog init, pointed at Sequential, plus the recorder line

posthog.init('YOUR_POSTHOG_INGEST_KEY', { api_host: 'https://YOUR_SEQUENTIAL_API_HOST' });
<script src="https://YOUR_SEQUENTIAL_API_HOST/rec/recorder.js/YOUR_REPLAY_INGEST_KEY"></script>

Your coding agent can do the install. Copy one prompt into your coding agent. It adds Sequential to the analytics you already run, runs your build and tests, and lists every file it changed. You read the diff.

04

What you get on top

  • Ask. Type one plain sentence, for example "tried to pay and was blocked by a payment error". Sequential lists the sessions that likely show it, strongest first.
  • Fix briefs. Every case comes with a fix brief: what users hit, where, the evidence, since when, and how Sequential checks the fix after the release.
  • Release check. The case shows both rates, for example "Before 2026.10.09: 123 of 300 (41%) sessions hit it. After: 10 of 82 (12.2%)." Session counts are exact.
  • Calibration. Your team marks each of the judge's readings Right or Wrong. After at least 20 checks on a question's current wording, "How often people agree with the judge" shows if its answers are right as often as the judge says, on your own sessions.
  • Changes. Changes is a timeline of what your company changed: releases, product changes, prices, campaigns and incidents. Sequential shows what happened near a change.
  • Backend SDK for Node. @usesequential/node sends events from your server. Sequential puts them on the same person as the browser events, and a server error opens a case at its first occurrence.

Questions about switching from PostHog

Is Sequential a good alternative to PostHog?

Yes. Sequential is session replay and product analytics in one product. It finds where your users get stuck, counts how many people it hit, and measures the same problem again after the release that fixes it.

Can I keep my PostHog SDK?

Yes. Change the key and the host in your posthog.init call, and your tracking calls stay as they are. On the web, one recorder line adds session replay.

Does Sequential have session replay, funnels and heatmaps?

Yes. Sequential has ranked session replay with DevTools, funnels, flows and retention, and heatmaps for Desktop, Tablet and Mobile widths.

Can I keep PostHog's mobile SDK?

Yes. PostHog's open-source iOS and Android SDKs send events and screen recordings to Sequential. Mobile replays play in the same player as web replays.

How much does it cost?

Sequential is in hosted preview, and the hosted preview takes no payment. Anyone can create an account.

How long does switching take?

You change two values in your posthog.init call and add one recorder line. Events usually show within about a minute.

Can my coding agent use Sequential?

Yes. Connect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Claude Desktop or another MCP client. Your agent gets the problem, how many people had it and the replays.
